painkiller cocktail
When I was in St. John (US Virgin Islands) last summer we were graciously greeted to the island with the local island drink. The Painkiller, pronounced pain-killah, does literally that–it takes all your pain & worries away. It has a soft blend of fruity and frothy with a little hint of spice from the fresh nutmeg, and can magically make you feel like you’re on vacation even if you’re not. This weekend Paul and I were feeling like we needed something to get us into that vacation ease and mindset without actually leaving our living room and we successfully achieved that after concocting one too many painkillers.

On a difficulty scale of 1 to 10 I give this a 3. While it’s not difficult at all 1 is basically just the act of making the drink and 2 would be crafting a drink that requires more than basic ingredients. 3 just means I had to figure out proportions that worked best (and I’m sharing them below so really you have it very easy). If you’re looking to shake things up with something as simple as a cocktail that you don’t typically order I would highly recommend the Painkiller.

So, cheers! To getting married in 87 days, to house-hunting and the emotional roller-coaster that process is, to new opportunities, to the weekend (now 5 days away), and to bringing a taste of my vacation into my home!

  • 2 ounces dark rum (I used Bacardi Gold)
  • 3 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1 ounce orange juice
  • 1 ounce coconut cream (use a little less than the full ounce)
  • fresh nutmeg
  • ice
  1. In a shaker combine ice, rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and coconut cream, shake well.
  2. Pour all contents (including ice) into a bar glass.
  3. Sprinkle fresh nutmeg over the froth.
